Bakes On Mesh Series – Part 2 (Maitreya & LeLutka)

Since I’ve owned my Maitreya body for what seems like forever, I decided to start out my Bakes On Mesh (BOM) testing with it.  There are already tons of blog posts out there about how to use BOM, so I’m not going to spend a ton of time reviewing it all.

The Maitreya body is not BOM ready.  You have to purchase a relay in order for BOM to work (as well as making sure that you are using a BOM viewer).  The relay for the Maitreya body is free on Marketplace.

Basically, to start, take off everything.  Body, feet, hands, hair, clothes, alphas – everything.  What you’re left with is the original system avatar.  Previously, you needed to wear alpha layers to hide the system avatar.  With BOM, you don’t need the alpha layers.  Essentially, the BOM system takes the layers you wear on your system avatar and ‘bakes’ them onto your mesh parts – hence “Bakes On Mesh.” It also hides the system avatar so it can’t be seen under your mesh body parts.

Once you’re down to the system avatar, put on your Maitreya body, hands, and feet.  Add the Maitreya HUD and the Maitreya BOM relay.  (I can’t remember if you have to click the relay or just wear the first system skin, but once you apply a system/BOM skin, you don’t need to continue to wear the BOM relay.)

I was going to just take photos wearing the Maitreya body, but the deformed system head from my Bento shape was hideous, so I ended up adding the LeLutka Simone head as well to test.  LeLutka sent out updated heads that are BOM ready, you just have to click on the HUD to activate it.

Once I had all that done, I hunted around in my inventory for a system skin.  The first one I found was a skin from 2015 – DS Lyberty Spelt Quartz.  (Don’t mind my bald head – I didn’t want hair to distract from the skin!)

It actually looked pretty good.  So I tried a few more.  This is a Belleza skin from 2013 – Mya Pale BBB 1.  The make up looks good on the LeLutka head.

The next skin I tried was LAQ Martina was 2013.  This skin was my go-to skin for a long time.  You can see, however, the tip of the nose and upper lip area under the nose look odd.  The shading is off.  Ah, well, I didn’t expect everything to work out perfectly.

Next I tried a skin from Lumae – Fae 6 Cinnamon Plum Delight from 2015.  This skin has freckles – you can see that they applied to the Maitreya body with no problem as well.  I did try a few of the old ‘cleavage’ tattoos – remember those?  Some were better than others, so in many instances you’re just going to have to try things on and see what works and what doesn’t.

The last skin I tried was my most recent go-to skin – Glam Affair’s Margot India Dark from 2015.

After testing quite a few other skins and finding out that most worked well, I decided to try messing around with some makeup.

I have to say, this is the part that got me the most excited.  I used to have a ton of system layer makeup and tattoos.  Once mesh bodies and heads hit the grid, they’ve basically been languishing in my inventory.  I don’t know why I didn’t box them up like I did everything else.

Because BOM supports system layers, you can now once again layer makeup and tattoos – up to 62 layers, if I remember correctly.  BOM will bake them onto one layer and then apply them to your mesh parts.

For example, here is some system layer face paint I got from who knows where:

Here’s some snowy winter makeup I found:

In addition to single layers, you can add multiple ones.  In this picture, I am wearing a blush layer, an eyeshadow layer, and a lipstick layer, in addition to the system skin.  BOM applies them all to my mesh head.  The eyeshadow is a bit off, but the blush and lipstick look great.

Once I had playing around with skins and makeup out of my system, I decided to focus on what I knew would be problem areas – the hands and feet.  However, this post is long enough, so I’m going to discuss those in Part 3 of this series.

Bakes On Mesh Series – Part 1 (Preparations)

Image Source: xelerus.de

A few days ago I finally got around to trying out some of the Bakes On Mesh (BOM) features.  I have to say, I’m pretty excited about this. 🙂

For several years now, I have used the Maitreya mesh body and a LeLutka mesh head (Simone).  I know the Maitreya body is not the most viewer efficient body, but I like it.  Mesh heads have always been resource heavy because of the layers required for things like makeup.  Honestly, the heads were confusing to me, so I generally just used the makeup that was included in the HUD, because I hated having to faff about with appliers.

Also, Maitreya and LeLutka both used the Glam Affair skins in their HUDs, so I just stuck to those skins, since I could make my head and body parts match with a click of the HUD.

The amount of appliers was an issue for me as well.  Creators had to make items/HUDs/appliers for so many different bodies – I would end up deleting items for bodies I didn’t own just to keep my inventory down.

I did keep my SLink shoes, however.  Ages ago, before mesh bodies were a thing, many dancers purchased SLink hands and feet, because they looked miles better than the system avatar hands and feet.  Remember these lovely gems?

Losing consciousness . . . from the ugly . . .

Now, these are extra hideous because of the old shoe layers we had to wear with heels.  But still – hideous.

I have been watching SLink and her updates to the SLink body with the release of BOM.  My partner owns the male SLink body and since I already owned SLink hands and feet, I decided I would also splurge and get the new Redux BOM body version.

So I went to SLink and updated my hands and feet purchases and then purchased the new Physique body.  Let me tell you – there’s a lot of stuff in there!  When I tried to update my hands, I got a notice that I needed to send a notecard, because the updates had to be done manually.  So I did.

I got a lovely note back that I actually didn’t need the update, since I had purchased the updated body bundle.  The CSR also let me know that I had received a refund because they were taking into account my previous purchases.  Awesome!!  5 stars for SLink. 😀

Once I had all the pieces purchased and assembled, I was ready to sit down and start playing around with BOM.  Surprisingly, I still had a fair number of system skins in my inventory (I thought I had boxed most of them up and stored them).  I didn’t have much system clothing because I did box up most of it for storage or just deleted it outright.  I did find some pieces mixed in with my applier outfits, so I used those.

I did a first round of tests with my Maitreya body and LeLutka head.  Then I did a second round with the SLink body parts and the LeLutka head.  Stay tuned for Parts 2 and 3, where I show you the results.

LOTD #276 – Facing Fear

LOTD 276

She blinked, confused, as cameras flashed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One of my favorite quotes is by Ralph Waldo Emerson – Always do what you are afraid to do.
I’ve always wanted to be a better photographer, both in RL and SL.  I’ve taken online courses and tried to teach myself, but my photos never seem to match what I see in my head.
A month or so ago, I was scrolling through my social media and saw that the Visionaire Institute in SL was accepting applications.  I’ve thought about applying for several semesters, but never did.
All those negative thoughts ran through my head – “I’m not good enough, I’ll never learn to take photos like X” – and on and on.  Mostly it was fear talking.
Fear that I wouldn’t be able to learn. Fear that I wouldn’t be able to hold my own with the other students. Fear that I wouldn’t be creative enough. Fear of stepping out of my comfort zone. Fear of social interactions.
This time, though, I decided to face my fears, and I applied.  I thought, if I get in great, if I don’t, I can always apply again later.  I purposely tried to put it all out of my mind after I applied, so that I wouldn’t drive myself crazy.
I actually succeeded in not obsessing over the application, so I was happily surprised to get a notice that I had been accepted into the program.  🙂
And I’m so glad that I applied – after only two classes, I’ve learned a ton and have met some of the greatest people. I am looking forward to learning more and hopefully improving my skills as I go.
Thanks, Mr. Emerson. 😀
This look was inspired by the Burlesque round at Genre.  Burlesque is one of my favorite things and I think I bought one of everything there!
Tons of corsets and lovely vintage furniture – including this fabulous bar set.  I know I’ll get a lot of use out of it – it’s so versatile.
Genre is almost over (the new round will start on the 15th), so make sure you head on over and pick up the amazing burlesque goodies before they disappear!
6 Word Stories – LOTD #273 – Valkyrie
I’ve recently gotten on a kick of writing and reading 6 word stories.  I always like to combine a story with my pictures, so I thought this would be fun. Here goes!
Infatuation – LOTD #271
Infatuation~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I’ve been so busy working on dance projects that I haven’t had much time to take any photos.  So this week, while I have a bit of a break, it’s photo time!
When I take photos, I try to use new items I’ve acquired, and then I can sort them in inventory. I’ve gotten so behind and acquired so many things (thank you, free SL13B gifts!), my inventory was getting out of control.
I spent much of yesterday sorting and boxing and deleting – so cathartic!  Some of the things I had yet to unpack were Birdy’s items from The Arcade. A good friend gifted me the bikini (which is amazing and fits my Lara body perfectly), and I had the arm/leg chains and the headpiece from my own plays.  Add in some gorgeous hair from Truth, and Bam!
I haven’t worn my mesh heads in so long I’d forgotten how much I love them, especially for photos.  I have more time to play around with layers and modes in Photoshop if I don’t have to spend hours smoothing out spiky bits!
I can’t wait to finish opening boxes and find out what other treasures are waiting inside. 😛
Keep Your Hat On – LOTD #270
LOTD 270~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You know how sometimes when you sit down to do something, you sort of get on a roll and before you know it, you’ve done way more than you intended?
That’s what happened when I sat down to blog some of my goodies from the Vintage Fair.  😛
I was trying things on, sorting them out, taking pics, and suddenly – I had three LOTD posts done!
This pic is of the fabulous cloche hat and gloves from Eclectica.  I am always looking for great vintage pieces, and I found them. 🙂
The gloves are mesh – I just alpha’ed out my Maitreya hands and they fit perfectly.  The cloche hat comes with or without hair – the hair version lets you change the hair color to most colors.
If you haven’t made it to the Vintage Fair yet, don’t wait.  It’s open until June 26, and there are some terrific vintage-y things you don’t want to miss!
I’m Not Bad – LOTD #269
LOTD 269
I saw this harness outfit by Salt and Pepper at the Vintage Fair, and I had to have it.  It comes with a HUD and you can change the metal and pearl colors.
I wanted to keep the look for this photo simple, so I added some elegant earrings I had from Glitzz and some gorgeous hair from Elikatira (also from the Vintage Fair).
If you haven’t been to the Vintage Fair yet, you’re missing out.  There are some fantastic vendors there with some absolutely amazing pieces.  There is an ARC limit (75K, I believe), so wear something simple and avoid jewelry!
I know I’ll be going back several times to pick up pieces I missed on the first go-round – I’ve got my eye on a fab vintage swim cap from Meva. 🙂
Happy Shopping!
To Mesh or Not To Mesh – What a dilema! | a SECOND for Imagination
The mesh head debate rages on, as more and more creators release mesh heads (for guys as well), and skin creators are slowly catching up, coming out with appliers for the various heads.
I’ve drooled over many of the Catwa heads, but I have yet to make a purchase.  For now, I’m content with my Lotte and Simone Lelutkas, my LOGO Alex, and my various Genesis Lab heads (I think I have around 13 of them now).  I love GL heads, not only because they are gorgeous, but because they are often put in gachas, which means if you’re lucky, you can score a mesh head for a mere $99L.  Steal!!!
Read PurpleButterfly Lykin’s post below about her experience with purchasing a mesh head:
“I’ve always held the view that mesh heads look a tad on the freaky side. That they often weren’t an improvement on the base avatar most people had carefully crafted. To be honest, a part of me still thinks this way. Some mesh heads do look strange, maybe because they represent to me a higher degree of falseness given they are so perfectly aligned?”
Sultry – LOTD #268
LOTD 268 Censored
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I don’t normally like censorship, but I do try to avoid any NSFW posts.  However, I’ve been having so much fun taking pics with the goodies I picked up at the Vintage Fair, that I kinda forgot. 😛

So, out comes the trusty ‘censored’ bar – I wouldn’t want any of the faint-hearted to keel over while reading my blog!

I do have an uncensored version on my Flickr stream, so if you want to mosey over there and have a gander, feel free. 😀

(If the link doesn’t work, please let me know – Flickr has changed their rules and I’m still trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t when it comes to posting pictures from there to here!)

I’ve been shopping like a fiend for the last week or so – so many new events open that I hadn’t been to yet – FaMESHed, Collabor88, We ❤ Roleplay, and (thanks to one of my fabulous blogging groups), I was lucky enough to snag an early access pass into the Vintage Fair!

I love being able to wander around before an event is open – it’s not crowded or laggy, and I can actually walk around, instead of cam-shopping.

I was especially excited to see what was at the Vintage Fair, and I wasn’t disappointed.  There are some fabulous items – accessories, hair, skin, clothes, decor – anything and everything.

The outfit you see is from Avenge at the Vintage Fair.  I’d never heard of Avenge before, but they are definitely going to be added to my go-to shopping list.  I took another picture in an outfit I picked up from there (click here to see it) and I know I will get lots of use out of both.

The fabulous hair is from EMO-tions, out now at the We ❤ Roleplay event.  I love the soft curls.  The necklace is a treasured piece from deviousMind – the LaSombre necklace.

I’ve also been playing around with some free filters and actions I got for Photoshop – so much fun!
