LOTD #177 – Good Omens

Thirty seconds later an explosion took out the village green, scythed the valley clean of every living thing, and was seen as far away as Halifax.

. . . any divine or devilish intervention had been materially helped by the contents of Agnes’s petticoats, wherein she had with some foresight concealed eighty pounds of gunpowder and forty pounds of roofing nails.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sadly, this round of A Tattered Page is almost over.
If you haven’t stopped by The Library yet, you have today and tomorrow to drop everything and run over there to grab all the goodies.
One of the amazing items for sale is this medieval style dress from Senzafine.
Agnes Nutter, whose prophecies are a major factor in helping to stop the coming Apocalypse, is a minor character in the novel.
But what a character. 😛
I love that the dress has little lumps and bumps in the skirt to simulate the hidden gunpowder and nails.
The messy, windblown hair is a recent group gift from Truth, and I thought it was perfect for this photo.
The necklace is one I’ve had for a while, but I thought the crystal was something a witch would wear, and it looks so good paired with the dress.
In the second picture are two items from @->~ISD, a new-to-me store.
The Death goggles come in both silver and gold versions.
I love the little skull detail on the front.
The bandanna comes in two versions as well, the Death grinning one shown here and a laughing one (which is equally terrifying to look at).
I know Death is typically shown as a male, but I figure Death can probably be whatever he/she wants, right?
Hurry on over to ATP before the round ends – run!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am so honored to have been picked to blog for A Tattered Page (ATP) this round.

I love the whole concept of the event, and I was even more excited to learn the book for this round was Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman.

Since the book deals with the advent of the Apocalypse, the Four Horsemen put in several appearances. 🙂

Of the four, War is my favorite character.

She is characterized as a beautiful woman, who creates conflict wherever she happens to be.

“People were always fighting, over her, and around her,” War thinks, early in the book. “It was rather sweet, really.” (46)

I was blown away when I saw some of the amazing items available for this round.

I love the detail of the horns/halo set from Roawenwood and I think the juxtaposition of the horns with the halo is the perfect metaphor for War in Good Omens.

The hair from KoKoLoReS is a free gift at this year’s Hair Fair (which is ending in the next week, so if you haven’t made it there yet, hop to it!).

It comes with color change HUDs so you can make it any color under the sun.

The Stringer Mausoleum is offering “The Prophetess” makeup for tattoo layers at ATP.

It comes with a ton of colors, but the Void option was the perfect fit for this look.

The dress is another offering at ATP from Greymoon.

It comes in 4 different options – snakeskin, red snakeskin, leather with a cross design on the fabric, and plain leather, which is what I’m wearing here.

I love the cross cutout in the dress – I didn’t even have to wear the alpha layer provided and it fit perfectly!

When you stop by the Library, be sure to pick up a copy of these amazing shoes from Pale Empress.

Appropriately named War, they are for Slink High feet and come with a HUD that offers a ton of options.

I love the details on the front, the skull and the bullets – again, so apropos for the character of War.

This round of ATP only runs until July 31st, so make sure to stop by before it ends.

If you like British humour and satire, I encourage you to read the novel!

Aziraphale – ATP – Good Omens

ATP Good Omens LogoOne of my favorite events opened yesterday and I can’t wait to show you some more of the amazing items available!

Good Omens centers around the arrival of the Anti-Christ, and thus the Apocalypse.

Two of the main characters are Crowley (a demon) and Aziraphale (an angel).

Crowley is described as “an Angel who did not so much Fall as Saunter Vaguely Downwards.” (pg. ix)

Crowley has grown attached to Earth and humans and keeps trying to convince his superiors that, if left alone, humans devise many more ways to harm each other than any demon could ever imagine.

During his long tenure on Earth, Crowley has come to a sort of ‘gentleman’s agreement’ with his Heavenly counterpart, Aziraphale.

Aziraphale is quite a contrast to Crowley (as expected), and upon meeting him, according to the novel, people “formed three impressions: that he was English, that he was intelligent, and that he was gayer than a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxide.” (pg. 103)

Only one of these is true.

(I’ll let you read the book and find out for yourself. 😀 )

Anachron (one of my favorite creators) has designed a slew of goodies just for men!

For both Aziraphale and Crowley, there is an Ancient Hero outfit, a Formal Fantasy suit, and a Noble House outfit for you to choose from.

Park Place (another favorite!) put together an amazing set of decor items, based on Aziraphale’s bookstore.

Aziraphale isn’t really interested in selling books, but rather collecting them.

The novel tells us he uses “every means short of physical violence to prevent customers from making a purchase. Unpleasant damp smells, glowering looks, erratic opening hours — he [is] incredibly good at it.” (pg. 43)

The decor items from Park Place are based on the descriptions of the back room of Aziraphale’s shop, and I think they are spot on!

ATP Good Omens Aziraphale Desk Set

“The back room of his bookshop contains a table, chairs, and likely someplace to store copious amounts of alcohol, as he and Crowley have a proclivity for going back there for the sake of getting completely plastered and waxing philosophically on whatever suits their fancy” (pg. 47)

The set includes the desk, chair, bookcase, stack of books, rug, Agnes Nutter’s notes and book, scattered books, and some books of prophecy.

I love the worn wooden textures of the desk and the chair has very nice male and female sits in it.

Each piece is separate, so you can rez them where/how you like.

Aziraphale is wearing the Formal Fantasy suit from Anachron – I love the look of the vest with the long jacket.

It’s mesh and comes in 5 standard sizes – it’s all one piece, so it speeds up time spent faffing with your wardrobe. 😛

Thrown over the back of Aziraphale’s chair, you’ll see another fantastic item – the Miamai Aziraphale hat.

If you’re a hat person, Miamai has both Aziraphale’s hat (in 3 different colors) and a hat for Crowley as well (again in 3 colors).

In addition, Aziraphale’s hat comes with halo/no halo options (the no halo hat is pictured here) and the Crowley version has horns/no horns options.

As an avid reader myself, I always pictured Aziraphale curled up in a nook, poring over his (well, sort of) copy of Agnes Nutter’s Prophecies.

ATP Good Omens Aziraphale Book

Rook and 22769 created items that fit my mental image perfectly.

This comfy wingback reading chair from Rook has a stand pose built-in (seen here), as well as a an additional seated pose (click on the book stack for it).

I love the look of 22769’s creation – such an important book as The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter deserves a special place. 😀

If you haven’t read Good Omens and you like satire and sarcasm (because, who doesn’t?!), you should purchase a copy today.

(Also, if you’re British, you’ll probably understand more of the jokes than I did, a poor Yank who’s never seen the M25.)

Stop by the Library and pick up some (or all) of these gems for yourself!

A Tattered Page – Good Omens Opens Today!!

ATP Good Omens LogoOne of my favorite events on the grid is A Tattered Page.

It makes my little literary heart sing to find an event that encourages people to – gasp! – read a book. 😛

When I heard they were looking for bloggers, I applied, though I didn’t really expect to be chosen.

Surprise!

This round the book is Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett.

I had read the book before, but I reread it a few weeks ago, just to refresh my memory.

It was just as funny the second time through.

The basic story is that the Anti-Christ is arriving, and thus the world as we know it will be ending.

Crowley (a demon) and Aziraphale (an angel), who have grown quite fond of Earth and each other, try to figure out their places in the ‘ineffable plan.’

However, the Anti-Christ is placed with the wrong family thanks to a loquacious Satanic nun, and hilarity ensues.

There are some scary characters in the novel, i.e. The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

One of the horsemen is War, who is a woman known as Scarlett.

She is described in the book thus:

“Her hair was true auburn, neither ginger nor brown, but deep and burnished copper-color, and it fell to her waist in tresses that men would kill for, and indeed often had. Her eyes were a startling orange. She looked twenty-five, and always had.’  (pg. 44)

She is, of course, beautiful.

However, she is described as beautiful “the way a forest fire was beautiful: something to be admired from a distance, not up close.” (pg. 104)

War is certainly a notable character in the novel, and was the inspiration behind two amazing items for this round.

ATP Good Omens War Helmet 2

War rides a motorcycle in the book, and I always imagined her as the smokin’ hot biker babe.

This incredible helmet from Eclectica was inspired by the following excerpt:

“There was something about the sight of a beautiful woman on a powerful motorbike with a sword stuck on the back that had a powerful effect on a certain type of man. So far four traveling salesmen had tried to race her, and bits of Ford Sierra now decorated the crash barriers and bridge supports along forty miles of motorway.” (pg. 233)

ATP Good Omens War Helmet

War is wearing the black version, but the helmet also comes in pale and, of course, red.

The helmet is modifiable for easy resizing (make a copy first!) and you can also alter the transparency of the visor if you’d like.

After she steps off the bike, things get even more dangerous.

ATP Good Omens War Dress

The War Dress by Luminary is fitmesh and comes in a variety of colors – red, blue, cream, sky, and black.

“‘Thanks for the warning,’ Scarlett purred. Her voice sounded like something that lurks in the long grass, visible only by the twitching of its ears, until something young and tender wobbles by.” (pg. 47)

I love the plunging neckline on the gown and the black side panels which help emphasize your curves.

If you’d like to snag these goodies for yourself (and who wouldn’t?!), stop by The Library.

Don’t forget to check out the other goodies for sale – there are some amazing creators in this event!

The event opens July 7 at noon SLT and runs through July 31st.

Things Fall Apart

Serendipity
Image Source: cinemaissue.blogspot.com

Serendipity is a familiar friend in my life.

I get very frustrated with the way things are going, and everything seems to fall apart.

And then serendipity shows up, and I find out that what’s coming next is even more amazing.

I’ve been struggling lately with various things, and found myself kind of stuck.

Today – serendipity. 😀

Things are falling into place and I couldn’t be happier.

After applying to blog for several events and hearing nothing (which is sometimes even more discouraging than an outright rejection), I found out that I’ve been accepted to blog for A Tattered Page!!!

Currently my favorite event on the grid (because books!), I’ve blogged about their other rounds before.

This time, I haven’t actually read the book they’ve chosen, so I also get to spend time doing one of my favorite things – reading. 😀

I haven’t had much time this week to spend in SL and I’m feeling very behind.

There are a ton of shopping events I want to go to (those L$ don’t spend themselves, you know!), and several places I want to go to visit so I can take pictures.

And thanks to another piece of serendipity (an unexpected windfall), I will be able to purchase both of the mesh heads I’ve been drooling over for months.

I did manage to sneak in a visit to the new Literature Alive! project mentioned by Inara Pey.

I love Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and have often had the pleasure of teaching it.

So when I read about a way to make my own virtual pilgrimage, I had to go.

It’s a marvelous introduction to Chaucer, complete with information about his life and times.

You travel to the Tabard Inn, where you are given notecards with information about Chaucer, Thomas Beckett, and medieval society.

Outside the Inn are 12 crosses, where you receive notecards with short synopses of 12 of the Tales.

Read the synopses, find the treasure chest near each cross, and then answer a question about each Tale to win a prize.

It was a lovely trip down memory lane for me, bringing back long-forgotten flashes of my college studies and reading pieces of the Tales in Middle English.

I also have many fond memories of students breaking out into genuine laughter while reading The Miller’s Tale.

I highly encourage you to make the pilgrimage yourself – you won’t be disappointed. 🙂

Usher - Vincent Price
Image Source: http://wifflegif.com/

Their next project is supposed to be The Fall of the House of Usher at the SL12B celebrations.

I will definitely be making time to go see that one – Poe is one of my all-time favorite authors.

When teaching Poe’s stories, Usher included, we would follow up our studies by watching the Vincent Price movies.

If you like Poe, old horror films, and Vincent Price, you can’t go wrong!

I also have copies of The Masque of the Red Death and The Pit and the Pendulum.

If you only know Vincent Price from his voiceover in Michael Jackson’s Thriller, watch these.

When I was younger, I watched him in The House of Wax.

To this day, wax statues give me the heebie-jeebies. :/

Enjoy your Friday and Happy Weekend, folks!

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea

ATP 20KA Tattered Page is now open and the novel this round is 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

There were lots of great items, but one in particular stood out for me.

Captain Nemo’s Library.

When I saw it, I knew I had to have it.

Complete with books, a ladder, and a viewing window, it is exactly as I always imagined it would look.

ATP Nemo Lib LadderI love the animations included with this piece.

You can sit on the ledge, watch the whale outside the window, or look for a good book to pass the time.

The candle lamp is touch on/off.

After playing around with the library, my mind is swimming with ideas.

(See what I did there? 😛 )

I even passed up the cute framed narwhal art in favor of the library.

Don’t miss out on this amazing event and this awesome piece.

Whales and Narwhals

ATP 20KA Tattered Page recently opened its doors for the 3rd round, based on the novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

There are lots of great sea-themed items (some of which I hope to show in a later post), including an adorable framed pic of a narwhal.

Narwhals have been a topic in my house a lot lately, because of the current Sprint commercial and its use of the narwhal song.

In case you haven’t seen it (or gotten this song stuck in your head), here it is:

Narwhal Song

This led to a discussion about the Loneliest Whale.

If you haven’t heard the story about the loneliest whale (or the 52-herz whale), there’s a great story on Deviant Art.

You can find it here, and it discusses a current Kickstarter project for a documentary on this poor creature.

In addition, there is some amazing whale art, so spend a few minutes and check it out.

(P.S.  I still think DST sucks!!)

Enjoy your Monday, folks!

A Tattered Page

Image Source: www.everystockphoto.com
Image Source: http://www.everystockphoto.com

A Tattered Page is a new event in Second Life.

Each round of the event will be based on a novel.

I stumbled across this event on its inaugural round, which was based on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

As an English literature major, I LOVE this idea.

The vendors who participate are asked to actually READ the chosen novel and then create something based on their experience reading the book.

The second round is now open.

This time, the novel is Ray Bradbury’s The Martian Chronicles.

I can’t wait to see what the designers have come up with for this round!
