After 3 months of trying things on, sorting, boxing, and deleting, I’m finally done with my inventory cleaning project!
It’s amazing how much stuff you can accumulate in 6 years. ๐
When I first started, I was hoping to delete/box enough stuff to get my inventory count under 30K.
While I wasn’t as successful as I had hoped, my inventory count is currently sitting at 31,066.
Partially because I’m a shopaholic, so I’ve continued to accumulate things as I was getting rid of them!
I’m pretty happy with my clothing and costume folders now.
I’ve sorted things into folders that make sense (to me) so I can find things, and I’ve gotten rid of a bunch of items that have never seen the light of day.
Clothes I never wore, furniture I’ve never used, shoes with invisiprims – all gone.
I’m even considering (gasp!) getting rid of some of my old N-Core shoes – the ones with the mesh feet built-in.
I love N-Core, but once I tried the Slink feet and then got my Maitreya body – well, I only buy shoes for the Maitreya feet anymore.
However, N-Core has startedย making shoes for the Maitreya feet, so I rejoined the group since I now have 60 group slots. ๐
If I do get rid of my old N-Core shoes, that might get me under the 30K goal.
I also got rid of a ton of skins I’d picked up from here, there, and everywhere that I never wore (I think somewhere around 100+ skins?).
It did get tedious towards the end, trying on everything and making decisions.
I found myself sometimes just looking at the ‘acquired’ date and making decisions based on that.
I figured if I got in 2010, have never worn it, and/or have no idea what it is/does/looks like, I probably didn’t need to hang on to it. ย ๐
I even considered doing some wholesale folder deletions, as my friend Nai recommended, but I just couldn’t do it.
Maybe someday, when/if mesh rezzing isn’t such an issue for some, I will make some room by deleting system clothing or non-mesh items.
For now, I’m hanging on to them.
I’ll have to figure out some other way to get down to 30K.
Stop shopping, maybe?
Nah. ๐
I’m now up to over 75,00 items and sometimes I get frustrated with it, but not enough to delete. I did some deleting a couple years ago and dumped a bunch of system dresses and things. Unfortunately I’m a hoarder and have trouble getting rid of anything! But really, there was nothing nice about the system dress! ๐
I try to keep things organized as I get them, but some days, everything just get dumped into one folder and then I have to spend time organizing again. Have I mentioned that I’m a tad OCD? ๐
I did keep some system clothing, because mesh often doesn’t rezz properly for some audience members when I dance. And I kept a few for sentimental reasons. ๐
As things progress, though, I agree – I will likely get rid of system clothing and go full mesh. I started out with mesh clothing, then hands, then feet, then a mesh body, and I’m now seriously considering a mesh head.
I don’t even know who I am anymore! ๐
Wow girlies, your wardrobes are huge! ๐
I’m sitting at around 6,000 right now and it’s already starting to make me itchy, haha! Liz, do you find that with an inventory of around 75K, it takes longer for SL to load or for your Inventory panel to open? I’ve heard that that really starts becoming a factor as more has to be pulled from the server upon each login.
I’ve heard that as well, which is why I try to keep mine under 30K. But probably fully half of mine isn’t wardrobe, it’s stuff I use for props in sets when I dance. Plus dance animations, dance tools, etc. ๐
Gosh, wouldn’t it be so great if we could just perma-rez the stuff that we may not necessarily need or want to carry around with us anywhere into some kind of virtual closet, thereby keeping the on-hand inventory much more manageable? I know you can do that if you own sufficient land space, but most people keep backups of copy-able items in their inventory just in case. Would just be so great if there were a reliable place to store stuff that you might not need *now*, but maybe *someday*!
I actually did that – I have ‘furniture’ that stores things I didn’t want to get rid of. But then if I ever want it, I have to find that piece of furniture, find the right box, then unpack everything back into inventory. Not terribly convenient, which is probably why so many people have such large inventories! I decided to box mine and then when I go back later, if I haven’t unboxed any of it, I just delete it. A few things I kept for sentimental value, but I don’t really need that 2009 pair of shoes or that dress from 2012. ๐ Besides, then it’s an excuse to pick up all the cute new stuff that’s out, right?! ๐
I haven’t noticed any slow down with the larger inventory. The only thing that’s slow is when there’s an inventory glitch and it looks like all the folders are empty. Then it takes some extra time to get it all loaded again. I’ve kept all my favourite system stuff! Sometimes I like system pants with a mesh top, but four piece boots…nope! Although I am sentimental and things stick around because of that! I have been known to box extra gacha stuff up…..it’s amazing how much can fit in a box! ๐
I wish I had a use for some of the gacha stuff, but I am usually looking for show props and no copy means I can’t put it in a rezzer. ๐ฆ
I love pants that come on system layers! I feel like trying to match a pair of mesh pants with a pair of shoes that will work without clipping or some alpha issue is such a headache. Give me all the system layer jeans, kthxbai! โค
Yay system layers! ๐ Sometimes mesh just doesn’t work together! Now that I don’t feel so alone about liking system, I’ll admit to liking system shirts and big flexi sleeves! (of good quality of course) :))
