Despite their promise to ‘work with’ the LGBT community over the issue of ‘real names,’ I’ve been waiting to see what Facebook actually does. You know, that whole “actions speak louder than words” thing?
So what do I see in my news feed today? Another story about Facebook targeting a group of people – this time the Wiccan/Pagan community. I’m sure this will become another PR black eye for Facebook, as it deals with the freedom of religion. (You can read the article here. Change.org has already started a petition over the issue.) However, it all ultimately boils down to this – Facebook’s TOS clearly says that you are to use your ‘real name.’
Facebook only enforces this policy when profiles are reported to them. The problem with this system is that internet trolls who don’t like someone/something seem to be purposely targeting these groups. They report a profile, find friends from that profile, report those friends, etc. etc. So Mark Twain wouldn’t be able to have a Facebook profile. (Not that he’d want one. -.-)
The whole thing is ridiculous to me. People – STOP using Facebook. You don’t like their rules, so don’t use them. And when they no longer have a product to sell (YOUR personal information), they will go out of business.
Amen. I have to use FB for the time being to communicate with a group, that is where I get a lot of important instructions. But I pretty much don’t participate with FB outside of that. I do not like it at all.
